Drawing is the representation of lines, or their modifications, upon flat surface in such a way that the curves, the depressions, the elevations, the structures, in short the linear character of an object, are shown to us. It includes in its scope perspective, light and shade and values, as some of the aids where by it attains it’s end. Colour in painting gives the glow and brilliancy of nature; line its grace and grandeur. Many books on paintings have been published in India, but a few on drawings, a preliminary basic necessity in art. Drawings in India is an attempt in a series of four volumes covering major styles in Indian Art; Drawings of Rajasthan is the first. First Chapter ‘Introduction’ describes in brief, ‘what is drawing’ and gives a short account of Jaipur museums. Chapter 2 is on the classification of drawing and their source. Chapter 3 describes different Rajasthan schools and their technique. Subject matter of drawings forms the fourth Chapter. Last chapter is an analytic study. Because of the dearth of publications on drawings in India, this first book in the series of four will be a welcome contribution to the history of art in India and will provide good study material for students, artists and connoisseurs.
